Mull has been one of my favourite islands to explore and photograph in all of Scotland and now it’s time for me to show you why! This intimate workshop will delve deep into the wonders of the west coast, from photographing my favourite birds (puffins) to hiking Ben More and exploring beautiful Iona.
The Best Coast: The West Coast
For 4 nights and 5 days, join me on an unforgettable experience on the Isle of Mull, the second largest island in the Inner Hebrides. If you are an outdoor enthusiast looking to see more of Scotland and improve your photography skills, look no further! This personal workshop and photo tour, with no more than 3 people per trip, means I can give in-depth help and guidance on photography techniques out in the field. With smaller groups, we can be more adept to the conditions, making the most of our time on the island.
We will be up early to make the most of the weather, with long days to ensure you see all there is to see on Mull. Staying in a beautiful self-catered cottage on the island, we will be perfectly located to explore all of Mull, flexible to the weather conditions thrown at us! At nights, we can sit down, review our photos from the day, with tips and tricks to improve your work and editing style.
Day 1: You will need to arrive in Glasgow on the 27th April or the 4th May, for a mid-morning departure by car. I will be your chauffeur and tour guide as we head north west from Glasgow to Oban, making one or two pit stops on route at the likes of Loch Lomond and Kilchurn Castle. We will catch the ferry over to Mull, where we will pick up food supplies and head to our accommodation. Weather permitting, we will head out at night to catch sunset, then back to rest up before the trip really starts!
Day 2: A quick breakfast before we head on our boat adventure to the Treshnish Isles and Staffa (weather permitting). This 6 hour trip will give us plenty of time to photograph the star of the show: the puffin! As well as possibly seeing dolphins, whales and eagles, we will have over 2 hours on Lunga and Staffa to see the ‘clowns of the sea’ up close and personal. We will also have time to photograph the world famous Fingal’s Cave, Scotland’s cave version of the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland. On the boat back to Tobermory, we can wonder at the splendour of the islands and beaches around Mull. Then it’s time to rewind, relax and review our photos from the amazing time on the water. If the forecast is looking fab, sunset will be on the cards to finish the day off!
Day 3: The third day on the island means it’s time for a hike! The only munro on the island, Ben More, is the focus of our efforts for the day. A 6 mile hike will take us most of the day, starting early morning and hopefully finishing with a big smile on all our faces, enjoying the views from the top. At nearly a thousand metres high, this walk is not the easiest, so be prepared to put on a little sweat! Afterwards, we shall return home to eat and review the day’s work – I will show an in-depth process of how I edit and choose my favourite pictures, with help on your own shots from the trip too to really help you on your photography journey.
Day 4: Depending on the weather, the plan for the day is to head to Iona, to explore and photograph its stunning beaches, coastlines and abbey. If the weather lets us down, we can explore all that Mull has to offer, including its castles, lighthouses and dramatic roads and scenes. A fun-filled day, ending again with photo help and guidance at the cottage after sunset.
Day 5: Sadly, it’s time to say au-revoir to Mull and we will head back via a mid-morning ferry to Oban, making it to Glasgow around mid-afternoon. From here, we shall say our goodbyes and hopefully look back on this trip with fond memories and beautiful photos to share with your friends and family!
